HOW WOULD YOU
(2023)
"How Would You" is an installation piece that explores the idea of the shadow self and the process of shadow work. Through three interviews with my best friends, the installation asks viewers to reflect on their own experiences with their shadow self. Each interviewee answers questions about how they would describe their life to their child self, who has positively impacted them, whether they are happy with who they have become, and what they need to forgive themselves and others for.
Carl Jung's theory of the shadow self serves as the foundation for this piece. The shadow self represents the parts of our personality that we do not consciously identify with, often seen as our "dark side". However, the darkness is not inherently negative, and we must acknowledge and integrate these aspects of ourselves to achieve greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.
Through the use of three monitors and headphones, the installation offers a private and intimate experience for viewers to reflect on their own shadow selves. By emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and acceptance, the piece encourages viewers to engage in their own process of shadow work. Overall, this installation serves as a visual representation of the complex and often difficult journey of self-discovery and acceptance. With the goal that viewers leave the space with a greater understanding of themselves and the courage to embrace all aspects of their being, including those that exist outside of their conscious awareness.
